Nikola Petrov of Skopje and Dragan Jaćimović from a bit of everywhere on the summit of the Island Peak (6189m): “A Prayer for Mother Earth”

A Prayer for Mother Earth

People say that a picture paints a thousand words.

Perhaps this photo says even more. We live in foul times. Everyone pretends not to notice what is going on around us. We walk upright and pretend to do what is right. Although we know this to be wrong, no one has the courage to admit that hypocrisy slowly becomes the basic means of communication between us and other members of our species and even other living things on our planet.

The foulness is in us.

That is why this act of standing on our heads on one of the Himalayan peaks was an attempt to see things from a different perspective. Not outside, but inside. Not as observers, but as a part of one all-encompassing entity called Nature. Not as an individual looking only to satisfy its needs, but as a community of all living things, which gives without asking for anything in return.

But is awareness that we are the ones doing foul things to Mother Earth sufficient? Of course not! A conscience is needed to start actions. Courage is needed to start the changes. A man will rather change the whole world than even a small part of himself.

That is why this was not written to explain the photo but to call you onto a path which will bring you more self respect, honesty and happiness. A path which is in itself a goal. A path which will encourage you to change, because that is the only way to save this wonderful planet for future generations.

Shall we start?

"Considering the overall current situation, Chinese authorities have decided not to grant climbing permissions in Tibet this year. This is valid for all world alpinists. Therefore, our planned expedition Cho-Oyu (8201m) had to be cancelled.

Two months ago we commenced preparations for climbing expedition Manaslu (8163m). Due to fact that this summit is considerably harder and more dangerous than Cho-Oyu (8201m) we have reduced number of alpinists that will attempt summit. We have chosen more experienced and those who took part in our recent expeditions. You can use this address to get informed about progress of the expedition and send support messages. We commence our journey 27. August. Return is planned for 10. October 2008."
